The project takes advantage of the natural slope of the streets to create two distinct levels. The first generates a large square keeping the identity character of the old market, and second, continuity is given to the sidewalks of neighboring streets by giving them greater extent where you can view the entire plaza. Finally, a cover is generated as an iconic element that give character and uniqueness to the building.
The project was located in the 'Garden of Bosquet dels encants' area affected by the new urban planning that shaped the Plaza de las Glorias and its environment as an urban center connecting the Poblenou 22 @, the Eixample and Ciutat Vella of Barcelona. The plot Bosquet gardens where would be the new market, would be separated into two pills originating a new vial Castillejos Street communicating with Meridiana Avenue perpendicularly. The plot destined to be the new Encantes Market adopts a triangular shape with steep slope toward the street Castillejos.
Many green areas are generated inside the project delimiting sales space within the public space. When the market is running this is full of 'life' with exterior stops and auction area; when the market is closed, this space will become a civic square for activities keeping this idea of large covered and open court to the city.
For the realization of the volumetric project we used Voronio algorithm. Initially, we extracted a set of points in the morphology of the new market square to then build different bisectors between selected points and all remaining group. Vornoi diagrams are a class of patterns called 'Let Direcht Tesseletions' and these occur spontaneously in nature.
It was expected that the structure of the project should be analyzed by finite element program giving us the exact coordinates in order to make the whole structure removing any possibility of error. With the extracted data we could place in a computer manufacturing system to build the elements of the structure generated in workshop and expedite their placement at building site.
The project included an energy virtual simulation for Encantes Market Square new cover in order to analyze the heat and light material used (EFTHE cushions) and thus to be able to calculate its life cycle. This calculation allowed us to adapt and improve all aspects of both thermal, acoustic and permeability of the square.
We introduce 2 videos; the first one shows the volume of the building of our new proposal for Encantes Market; and the second one shows the creation phase of the structure covered by the Voronoi algorithm.
